East Coast Vacations in New York City, What a Wonderful Town

Unless there’s a specific site you want to visit, your east coast vacations in New York City will take several days or a week, and you will still not see many of the most famous places. Accommodations tend to be quite pricey, so start early looking for bargains. You might consider staying outside the city and commuting although that approach can become pretty wearing after a few days. There’s a lot to see in this big, modern, bustling city. You will have plenty of resort getaways to choose from in the Big Apple. Price and accommodations are available far and wide.

The art museums can take a week if you’re interested in famous and memorable art and want to see them all. In fact, even if you are not an art aficionado, you’ll enjoy the Metropolitan Museum. There is certainly famous art there, but the arrangement makes it possible to absorb some of the culture of the various world cultures. I prefer to visit the US exhibit first because it includes some remarkable works not only from history but from various parts of the US. The Costume Institute is fascinating to anyone who is interested in clothes. You’ll find shoe buckles, buttons, shawls, collars, veils, and just about anything that has to do with clothing. These are only two of the possibilities. There’s a very nice lunch buffet for your convenience.

This is a happening city, and you will find a wide range of special events no matter when you visit. Of course, the most famous entertainment is theater, and you can find what’s playing at the time of your visit in an issue of The New Yorker, which is available at most news stands or stores. It’s best to arrange for tickets ahead of time. However, I have bought tickets at booths on the streets, and you might look for those vendors. It’s possible sometimes to get a bargain there.

I recommend the City Line boat tour for an overall look at the city. It goes by the Statue of Liberty, so you can see it without actually traveling there. However, an enjoyable day can be spent actually visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where you can search for names of your ancestors if they arrived by boat between 1892 and 1954.

Whether historic or modern, there are so many famous locations here that you’ll probably have to eliminate some and focus on those that you most want to visit. One that may be important to you is the World Trade Center, which collapsed in the attack of September 11, 2001. Also, the ethnic neighborhoods are delightful for visitors. You can sample traditional foods in many of these areas. There are buildings that are famous for their architecture, and if that is your interest, you will come home with a crick in your neck because there is so much to see.

Food tends to be expensive, but the delis are generally affordable and offer very good food. If you want an extraordinary dining experience, spend the money to go to dinner at one of the elegant New York restaurants. The service is like nowhere else, and the foods are the very best quality and excellently prepared by the best chefs in the world.

Your east coast vacations in New York City may simply be preparation for the next one and the next. There is much to see, and it’s truly a happening town.
