Romantic Resort Getaways: Niagara Falls

One of the most spectacular tourist attractions that you will find on the eastern side of America full of resort getaways and regarded as one of the natural wonders of the world is the famous Niagara Falls.

Although far from being the highest falls in the world, at only 54 meters (177 feet) on the American side and 60 meters high on the Canadian “Horseshoe” side, the depth of the falls below the “Horseshoe” is thought to be around 60 meters (180 feet), offering a massive and amazing water show.
Niagara Falls is outstanding more because of its spectacular width of 670 meters (2200 feet), as well the vast and unending volume that cascades down the Falls around the clock. Known for many years as the number one spot on the eastern starboard for honeymooners, Niagara Falls does indeed make for a very romantic setting.

The borders of Canada and America run through Niagara Falls, with most visitors to the fall coming to the Canadian side, which is generally regarded as being the most impressive. The area, known as the Horseshoe, is situated on the Canadian border, and is the most visited area of the Falls. There the water flow is particularly awe-inspiring; carrying an estimated nine times more water than the American side. More than 150,000 cubic meters of water pass through the Niagara Falls at the U-shaped Horseshoe every minute, at a speed of around 35 miles per hour. The water that flows relentlessly over the Falls comes from four of the five Great Lakes. From Niagara Falls, these fresh waters eventually find their way into the Atlantic Ocean.

While most visitors to the Niagara Falls are content to view the water from within relatively close range on the various strategically placed look-out points in the area, there are always those who prefer their experience to be more “hands on”. The traditional and still very popular way of getting as close to the Falls as though you are actually underneath them is to ride on the famous Maid of the Mist vessel, which has been taking visitors right up to the base of the Falls for decades. The “Journey behind the Falls” tour is another option for those who don’t mind getting their hair wet. Of recent popularity are the Niagara helicopter tours where you can soar above the Falls and which offer totally spectacular views, especially at night when the falls are lit up.

And although the main charm of visiting the city of Niagara Falls, both in Canada as well as in America, is to see and taste the falls, there are no shortages of attractions to keep visitors happy. These include some very modern land-based casino and hotel complexes, a recently-opened indoor water park with a year-round tropical climate, fantastic golf courses, vineyards and wineries and health spas, to name but a few of the many to be found in and around Niagara Falls. The city of Niagara Falls, Canada, receives over 20 million visitors each year. Worth a visit is the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, which is the site of many historic buildings, built when Canada was still under British rule and when Niagara-on-the-Lake was the capital.
