With hectic schedules and budgeting for an expensive vacation, it can be tough scheduling resort getaways with your friends or family. Many people have pondered on the idea of traveling alone to a destination that they’ve always wanted to explore. Here are some advice to take along when deciding to venture solo on your next vacation.
Don’t get too drunk
The worst thing that can happen is having too much alcohol. It will impair your vision and your reasoning skills. What may normally be considered dangerous or odd may just seem okay and normal. Always set a drink limit before you order the first drink. If you are a light weight drinker then its just better to not drink at all. Unlike popular misconceptions you don’t need to drink to have fun.
Never pull out large amounts of cash
Having a lot of money on you can make you an easy target for being robbed. It’s best not to carry much money at all. Better yet, carry two wallets. One with your IDs, credit cards, and money. The other with a minimal amount of cash and maybe one of those fake credit cards you get with the credit card offers in the mail. If you ever get robbed, just hand over the decoy wallet and be on your way.
One thing to consider if you are in a foreign country using foreign currencies is it may be difficult to figure out with conversion and price differences how much is too much cash to carry with you. In this case it’s best to carry a credit card or traveler’s checks so you don’t have to worry about carrying cash at all.
Be Wary of Friendly People
Criminals are always looking for easy targets especially ones that look like tourists. So you shouldn’t just trust anyone that is friendly. Kindly decline any invitations away from public social gatherings. It’s best to stay close or in restaurants, bars, or clubs where a lot of people are around for you to call for help.
Trust Your Instincts
If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t right. Trust your instincts. Again, this goes back to the drinking minimally principal. You can’t trust your instincts if you’re drunk. Drink to be tipsy but still be alert to your surroundings. Your first defense is always your feeling for whether you’re safe and secure at the moment. Where ever you go always look for landmarks like public pay phones, businesses that are open like bars and restaurants, and taxies.
Keep Away From Illegal Activities
The last thing you want to do is associating with criminal activities or worse, getting arrested in a foreign country. What may be considered a misdemeanor in the United States may be considered a felony in another country. You definitely don’t want to commit a crime the law consider worthy of capital punishment. In addition buying drugs or hiring a prostitute can get you involved with other criminals that may try to take advantage of you for being new to the region and not knowing all the applicable laws.
Stay Clear of Dangerous Neighborhoods
Before venturing out, read up on the region. Usually the local government tries to keep the tourist attractions safe away from criminal activities. Stay away from places with few open businesses or social gatherings. It is always good to be around many people that you can call for help if you need it.
Go to Bed Early
Even the late party goers have to sleep some time. Popular social gatherings all close so they can clean up to get ready for the next day’s business. When the party dies down, consider going back to the hotel or resort to rest. You can always party more the next day. Furthermore you don’t get a medal for having the longest stretch of insomnia. As businesses close and other vacationers take their rest, there is more chance of criminals taking advantage of those that are still out and about.
Conclusion
I’m not saying to not go on a vacation alone. Just take heed of the advice given so you can protect your self and maximize your fun. If you are still unsure about going on vacation alone, consider a cruise or a tour. That way you are always among familiar people.
